Short-Form Video and the Shrinking Attention Economy: What the Evidence Actually Shows

The claim that short-form video is destroying attention spans has become received wisdom. The research is more mixed, and more interesting, than the headline version suggests.

Time spent on short-form video platforms has continued to rise even as growth elsewhere in social media has slowed.

It has become close to a cultural consensus that short-form video — the feed of fifteen-to-ninety-second clips popularised by TikTok and now mirrored across every major platform — is eroding people's ability to sustain attention. The claim is intuitive and widely repeated by educators, parents and commentators. It is also considerably harder to establish with rigour than the confidence of the discourse suggests, and the research that does exist points to something more specific and more structural than a simple story of collectively shrinking brains.

What the data on usage actually shows

What is well established is behavioural, not neurological: time spent on short-form video platforms has continued to climb, average session lengths on these platforms have grown even as individual clips remain brief, and platforms across the board — including ones not originally built around short-form content — have restructured their interfaces around vertical, algorithmically-sequenced video feeds because engagement metrics reward that format. This is a robust and heavily documented shift in media consumption patterns. It is a separate question from whether the format is measurably changing underlying cognitive attention capacity, and that second claim is far less settled.

We have strong evidence people are consuming more short-form content. We have much weaker evidence about what, if anything, that does to attention itself.

Where the science is genuinely uncertain

  • Most research linking short-form video use to attentional difficulties is correlational, making it hard to distinguish cause from selection — people already prone to attention difficulties may gravitate towards the format.
  • Longitudinal studies capable of tracking attention measures over time in the same individuals are still relatively scarce and generally show small effect sizes where present.
  • Some researchers distinguish between sustained attention on a single task and the ability to rapidly switch between tasks, arguing heavy short-form use may specifically train the latter rather than uniformly degrading the former.
  • Confounding factors — sleep displacement, notification frequency, overall screen time — are difficult to separate from short-form video specifically in most study designs.

What does appear more consistent

Where the evidence is more consistent is around self-reported experience: large surveys find that heavy users of short-form platforms frequently report finding longer-form content, including films, books and lecture-length video, harder to stay engaged with than they previously did, even where objective cognitive testing does not show a corresponding decline in measured attentional capacity. Researchers studying this gap have suggested it may reflect a shift in tolerance for lower-stimulation content — an acquired preference rather than a diminished capacity — which would be a meaningfully different and arguably more manageable problem than the popular framing implies.

None of this amounts to a clean bill of health for the format, and researchers working in the field are generally cautious rather than reassuring in their public statements. But the available evidence supports a narrower and more specific claim than the one in general circulation: short-form video appears to be reshaping preferences and tolerance for pacing, and is unambiguously consuming a growing share of daily media time, while the harder claim — that it is degrading attention as a general cognitive capacity — remains genuinely open, under-studied relative to its cultural prominence, and not something the current evidence base is equipped to settle either way.
